Privacy Policy

ting is an app for learning Chinese by watching short clips of Chinese video with subtitles. This policy explains what personal data ting collects, why, who processes it, and the rights you have. It applies to the ting website at ting.fidelioware.com and the ting mobile app.
Who is responsible
The data controller is Ata Tan Dagidir, an individual developer based in Türkiye. Contact: ata.dagidir@fidelioware.com.
What we collect
- Account data: your email address, and, if you sign in with Google or Apple, the identifier that provider gives us. If you use Apple's "Hide My Email", we receive only Apple's relay address, or no email at all.
- Learning data: which clips you have watched and for how long, clips you report, the words you save with their familiarity level and review schedule, and your settings (such as daily goal and display options).
- Technical data: your IP address is processed when you connect, and is used briefly to limit repeated failed sign-in attempts. It is not stored in our database; our web server's access logs record it and are deleted after 14 days.
We do not collect your name, phone number, contacts, location, or payment details. We do not use advertising or analytics trackers, and we do not sell or share your data for advertising.
Your password, if you use one, is handled by our authentication provider (Supabase). Our own server never receives or stores it.
Why we use it
- To create and secure your account and sign you in.
- To keep your progress, saved words and review schedule in sync across your devices.
- To avoid showing you clips you have already watched.
- To send you account emails, such as confirming your address.
The legal basis is the performance of our agreement with you (providing the service you signed up for) and our legitimate interest in keeping the service secure.
Data stored on your device
The app keeps a copy of your progress, saved words and settings in your browser's or device's local storage, so it works smoothly. This is not a tracking cookie and is not shared. "Reset progress on this device" in Settings clears it.
Who processes your data
- Supabase: sign-in and account credentials.
- Resend: delivery of account emails.
- Contabo: hosting of our server, located in the European Union.
- Google and Apple: only if you choose to sign in with them, under their own privacy policies.
- YouTube: clips are played through YouTube's embedded player, which is provided by Google. When a clip plays, YouTube may collect data under the Google Privacy Policy. ting uses YouTube API Services.
Some of these providers are located outside Türkiye, including in the European Union and the United States, so your data may be transferred abroad in order to provide the service.
How long we keep it
We keep your data for as long as you have an account. When you delete your account, your account and learning data are deleted from our database and your sign-in identity is deleted at our authentication provider. Server backups are kept for up to 14 days and then deleted.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time in the app under Profile → Settings → Delete account. You can also email us to ask for deletion.
Your rights
Under the Turkish Personal Data Protection Law (KVKK) and, where it applies, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the right to know whether your data is processed, to access it, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to processing, to receive a copy of it, and to complain to a supervisory authority (in Türkiye, the Personal Data Protection Authority, KVKK). To exercise any of these, email ata.dagidir@fidelioware.com. We will reply within 30 days.
Children
ting is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. In some countries the minimum age to use ting without a parent's consent is higher (up to 16).
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. If the changes are significant, we will tell you in the app.
